Fatal Poisoning from South Delhi Region: Five-year Retrospective Study

As per WHO, most of the fatal poisoning occurs in the developing country, that too due to agriculture poisons. Various studies showed that the profile of poisoning of an urban area is different from the rural area. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed postmortem records of fatal poisoning cases for the last five years to know the profile of the poisoning in this part of India. Most of the poisoning cases were of male in the age-group of 21-40 years and that too due to household chemicals or agricultural pesticides used in the home. Among medicinal drug overuse cases, Dextropropoxyphene was the most common and males outnumbered females. The fatal drug abuse occurred in the age-group of 2nd and 3rd decade and among males. Most of the cases were of suicidal except for 10 cases of suicidal poisoning and one case of homicidal poisoning due to dhatura. Childhood poisoning cases were 25 in number, 20 of suicidal and 5 were of accidental. Most of the poisoning was due to household chemicals.
