Demographic Profile of Accidental Poisoning in Rural India

Abstract

Incidence of accidental insecticide poisoning is common worldwide. Morbidity and mortality of accidental insecticide poisoning is considered as public health problem in rural India. Present study highlights the demographic characteristics of accidental insecticide poisoning cases in rural India. In this study all accidental poisoning cases admitted during the 6 year period were selected. Total 40 cases were recorded and analyzed. Nearly 32.5% of the victims were in the age group of 10-20 years and males comprised 92.5% of cases. Majority of incidences took place in rural area. Farmers were the most common victims nearing to 100% of cases. 75% of victims only changed their clothing after the spray and 55% took bath along with changing the cloths after the spray. The study highlights the sociodemographic profile of accidental insecticide poisoning and its impact also suggests certain preventive measures to reduce morbidity and mortality due to accidental insecticide poisoning.
